founder of Saffron Valley

Meet Lavanya Mahate

Growing up in Southern India, I was inspired by the daily rituals of fresh cooking led by my mom and our kitchen help, Kanthama. From sourcing fresh produce at the local market to preparing spice blends and cooking meals from scratch, food was a central part of life. These childhood experiences sparked my passion for cooking, as I learned to make dishes like semolina pudding and curries, setting the foundation for my love of Indian cuisine.

After moving to the U.S. in 2001, I began sharing my culinary heritage with family and friends, eventually launching my own spice blends at the Downtown Farmer’s Market in 2010. This led to the opening of my first restaurant, Saffron Valley, in 2011, which has grown to five locations in Salt Lake City and one in London. At Saffron Valley, we celebrate the diversity of India’s regional cuisines, offering a culinary journey inspired by my roots and travels.
